The trail begins in Cesena, a city featuring notable medieval and Renaissance buildings, and stretches along the River Savio.
The type of road surface can make the excursion challenging, but the possibility of connecting Cesena, one of the most important cities in the region thanks to its position on the via Emilia, with the coast, a popular summer destination, helps overlook small difficulties.
The route is 32 km long and it is designed for mountain bike lovers. Moreover, the trail runs along the River Savio, which crosses the city of Cesena and reaches as far as the Adriatic Sea, up to Lido di Savio.
The trail – completely on flat ground – starts from the centre of Cesena (from the Rocca Malatestiana, to be precise) and reaches various points of interest before developing into a secondary country road that crosses the small villages met by the River Savio.
Cesena In 1589 Francesco Masini designed the new fountain, officially opened in 1591. Made of Istrian stone, the fountain features three steps, which make it rise from the square. Moreover, its richness of minute ornamental motifs shows Masinis greater propensity to design rather than to architecture.
Cesena It is a fortress that was born to defend the city. The one visitors can see now is the third fortification, built a short distance from the ruins of the late Roman and medieval ones. Indeed, the first fortress was located further upstream and was destroyed by a landslide, while the second one, destroyed by a Breton army, was further downstream. Subsequently, Galeotto Malatesta began to build the Fortress which visitors can admire today and which houses the Museum of Farming Culture.
Featuring a perfectly-preserved structure and furnishing, this unique library was included by UNESCO in the international register of Memory of the World Sites in 2005. Designed according to the wishes of Novello Malatesta and built by architect Matteo Nuti, it was completed in 1454. The monastic library houses 340 priceless manuscripts in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, and was the first civic library in Italy and indeed in the whole of Europe.
