Hiking along the "Alta Via dei Monti Liguri" - Stage #29

AVML Stage 29: From Sella della Giassina to Barbagelata

The "Alta Via dei Monti Liguri" is a ‘border’ path which separates the Mediterranean coast from the inland wilderness – a path on the line between the sea and the sky, the Alps and the Apennines. Just as if it were a ‘green highway’, it crosses all of Liguria for a total of 440 km along sunny ridges, grassy valleys, and shaded wooded areas.

Those who venture along the “Alta Via dei Monti Liguri” on foot can enjoy fascinating panoramic spots from which you can see all the way to Corsica, Monviso, and Monte Rosa. However, even the historical and cultural heritage of the area is noteworthy as the path runs along fortifications and splendid villages that deserve to be visited.

The red-white-red trail sign with the letters ‘AV’ identifies the itinerary you need to follow along the entire route, which is not particularly difficult and can be easily tackled throughout the year by average-skilled hikers. Moreover, the “Alta Via dei Monti Liguri” is surrounded by a network of paths and mule tracks, and crosses all the variants of pass routes, allowing you to interrupt your hiking trip whenever you wish.

Along the 43 stages of the hiking path you can find a number of accommodation facilities belonging to the “Alta Via dei Monti Liguri” Hospitality Association. There you can sleep, eat, find shelter in case of adverse weather conditions, and change the stages of the trips according to your own needs and skills.

You can purchase the official guide to the path on www.altaviainfoh24.com (to which we owe the gpx track of the “Alta Via dei Monti Liguri” published here).

29th STAGE: Sella della Giassina - Barbagelata (5.3 km) (Stage 3 of section 11 of the online guide www.altaviainfoh24.com)

In this stretch, the “Alta Via dei Monti Liguri” offers an undoubtedly relaxing stage due to the limited difference in altitude and to a length of just over 5 km. It can therefore easily be travelled together with the previous one.

From Sella della Giassina to Barbagelata, this stage includes wooded and panoramic ridges, cart tracks and paths. The path is constantly around 1000 metres, touching the peaks of Mount Bocco and Mount Lamaia

Points of interest

BARBAGELATA
BARBAGELATA

Barbagelata is a hamlet in the municipality of Lorsica, located at the turn of three valleys (Trebbia, d’Aveto and Sturla), at an altitude of 1,115 metres, which makes it the highest inhabited area of the province of Genoa. Boasting a long history, the village was an important outpost for local Partisan brigades during the Second World War thanks to its strategic location. The small village also lived a very hard page in the history of the Resistance, when it was ferociously looted and set on fire by Nazi-Fascist troops in the night between the 12th and 13th of August 1944, during a round-up. The old village parish church was partially destroyed in the fire and the remains are still visible today. It was then replaced by a new church (Santa Maria Regina del Creato), built in a modern style at the topmost point of the village.
