The High Way n.1, called THE GIANTS HIGH WAY, is a hiking trail with an incomparable scenery: it develops at the foot of the highest massifs of Europe, such as Monte Rosa, Matterhorn and Mont Blanc. This itinerary offers, alongside the superb examples of natural architecture in the Alps, incomparable examples of rural architecture, closely linked to the pastures life.
It goes along the left bank of the Dora Baltea river, The High Way n.1 is viable by anyone since it follows well-marked and fully signaled footpaths. It develops in 17 daily stages, from Donnas to Courmayeur (requiring on average of 3/5 hour walk each) providing hikers resting stops and dining options for every need.
The high natural value of these environments and the high and famous mountains, full of history and companies, which act as a superb setting, offer a picture of the past that the hiker will simply have to admire and appreciate.
15th Stage: Saint-Rhémy - Frassati mountain Refuge (10 km)
From the village of Saint-Rhémy you cross the road bridge over the Grand Saint-Bernard torrent, and after walking for about 100 meters on the dirt road, you turn right into the wide path that goes up to the village of Laval. Then, you follow the paved road through the towns of Couchepache and Mottes and, after a downhill section, you take on the right the dirt road that passes under the motorway viaduct and continues flat to the pasture of Devies (1,726 m. ).
A little later, you take the path with stone walls on the right, which rises through the pastures until Merdeux Lower alp; from here there is a short stretch of dirt road up to the pasture of Côtes, then you take the trail that leads to the ruins of Moindaz’s mountain pasture.
You go up crossing wide green meadows, to the summer pastures of Tsa de Merdeux (2,273 m.) and then, after crossing some streams and climbing a steep grassy ridge, you reach the plateau of Merdeux’s lakes where is located the Frassati mountain Refuge (2,540 mt.).
Opened in 2011, the alpine hut was built by the Operation Mato Grosso, a movement of young people from all over Italy. The refuge is entitled to the Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, a great mountain lover and devoted in his short life to poor and needy, and is located at 2,542 meters in a secluded plain immersed in the nature, surrounded by the solitary peaks of Mont Tapie and Petit Golliat . In the immediate vicinity there are the small lakes called "Lacs des Merdeux".
