From Superga to Moncucco: woods, vineyards and castles
The excursion starts from the Basilica of Superga to reach, with constant ups and downs in the woods, the Bardassano’s Castle first and then the Cinzano Torinese’s Castle, with a flat stretch that runs through beautiful vineyards. Walking between sweet and charming hills you will reach Moncucco Torinese, with a castle that houses the gypsum Museum and it overlooks the village thanks to its towers, offering an exciting view.
Technical description: 25.3 kilometers long hiking route. From Superga you get to the Bric Paluch, where you turn left reaching the Bric Pavesio, then you go up to Bardassano and then you descend to Sciolze. Just after the village you turn through vineyards reaching the small villages of Aprà and Cinzano. From here you go down to the junction to Vezzolano, turning right to St.Joseph, and then you will finally arrive in Moncucco Torinese.
Technical tips: Hiking clothes recommended: layers, backpack, shoes with non-slip sole, hat and sunglasses.
Refreshments and shopping: after Superga there are no rest stops for more than 10 km (bar-restaurant just after Bardassano, on the right before taking the road to Sciolze). Some shops in Sciolze and Moncucco. Public water fountains: there is one in Superga and another one before the Bric Paluch, then nothing until Sciolze, Cinzano and Moncucco.
Imposing fortress dating back to the eleventh century, beautifully preserved, it housed for a short period Federico Barbarossa after the siege of Chieri (1156). The castle overlooks a quiet village, with no traffic, bars and shops.
Fortress of medieval origin - witnessed by its walls and towers - today adapted as a residence. Along with the large park, the buildings that constitute the appliances and the parish church, the whole complex is today separated from the rest of Cinzanos residential area.
Magnificent building, surrounded by massive walls, that dates back to the fourteenth -fifteenth centuries, with later additions and alterations. There are two towers: the first protrudes from one of the sides, while the second - at the center of the building - is a connecting element between the two sides of the castle. You can enjoy a magnificent landscape, from the hills of Monferrato extends to the hills of Turin, up to Superga and to the Alps. The castle houses the Museum of Plaster Ceilings, wood matrix.
The Freisa, Bonarda, Malvasia and Barbera vineyards are cultivated on these sweet and sunny slopes, in this territory there is a production of high quality wines.
