Vetulonia: the lost and found city

Hiking in the Maremma, among nature and Etruscan findings

This route, although short, allows you to immerse yourself in another dimension, to go back in time and relive the history of the legendary Vetulonia and of the Maremma area in general.

It is an excursion that leads to the discovery of the various facets and customs of the Etruscan civilization but also of the local nature. Inside the forest the trail includes a Roman path that stretches near ancient hidden tombs.

Technical description:
The 4-km tour includes a mixed route: touristic, with a visit to the small town of Vetulonia, and naturalistic. The ring route stretches in the middle of the forest, so the trail is bumpy and irregular (presence of stones, leaves, roots). The last part is uphill.

Technical advice:
Wear comfortable clothing (in layers), a hat during the summer, hiking shoes, and use sticks in the final climb during the return part of the route. We recommend carrying a supply of water.

Where to park:
In Piazza Vatluna, in front of the Archaeological City Museum “Isidoro Falchi”.

Best period to visit:
Spring - summer

VETULONIA
VETULONIA

Located on the eastern slopes of the Poggio Ballone massif, dominating the Grosseto plain to the west, Vetulonia is an ancient seaside town on the shores of Lake Prile (today almost completely buried) which boasts great mythological heritage. Indeed, it was an important centre of the Etruscan civilization from the 6th to the 3rd century BC, a period in which it experienced great economic prosperity and became a commercial, political, and artistic centre of power. However, it completely disappeared in the Middle Ages, feeding legends about its real existence. It was only in May 1880, when some excavations carried out in the territory of Buriano by the physician-archaeologist Isidoro Falchi brought to light numerous Etruscan finds dating back to the ancient Vatluna, that the town was once more discovered. Today Vetulonia is a small town popular among tourists especially in the summer months, when these are attracted by the beautiful treasures of the Etruscan archaeological area that have given new life to the village.
