The route has a strong historical interest: it runs along the Austro-Hungarian Empires defensive line during First World War. You can meet different placements made by the Austrians along the Cima Rocca and Cima Capi slopes, through well-preserved and accessible trenches and tunnels.
The Ponales Road is the ancient street that connected Riva del Garda and Ledro Valley, and it is one of the most popular and frequented hiking and mountain biking paths in the Upper Garda area. Inaugurated in 1851, the road that goes up the Ponale streams valley was used until 1995, the year of the final closure after the opening of the new covered walkway connecting with Riva del Garda. Since 2004 it has been opened again for the exclusive use of the outdoor enthusiasts, becoming a bike path and a trail appreciated by many hikers. The road follows the tunnels carved in the limestone and the track overhanging the waters of Lake Garda, offering unique views.
