Home » Along the routes of transhumance in the Pollino Park
This itinerary in the Pollino National Park recalls the history of transhumance: the route was in fact used by the shepherds of Conocchielle, who with their flocks crossed the plains of Vacquarro, Gaudolino and descended along the “Scala di Gaudolino” towards Morano.
In one section the mule track climbs up the slopes skirting the Frido Gorge: we are along the “Scaletta” and from here specimens of yew and loricate pine can be seen. The Frido runs here with its clear, warbling waters.
Technical description:
The hike in the Pollino mountains begins in Conocchielle, where following the small alleys we proceed south, encountering some abandoned houses. Past a shepherd’s gate, we continue uphill along a scenic dirt road into former pasture land now overgrown with vegetation (admire the monumental holly trees).
You then come to a beech forest and continue left at the fork. After the fountain, go straight ahead and then take a path to the right that comes out in a clearing of monumental beech trees. We then follow the trail that comes out above the Scaletta Gorge, and then to the Low Plains of Vacquarro, on the banks of the Frido stream.
