In the forest for archaeological sites on the Asiago Plateau
Description of the route
Just outside Asiago is the locality of Prunno, the gateway to the Barenthal Forest. Here, in addition to the magnificence of the rich fir forest and the many traces of the Great War you can visit the “Battaglia shelter.” The important archaeological site was discovered in 1958. The artifacts found are dated between 13,000 and 10,000 years ago in the Upper Paleolithic, when the Plateau was frequented by prehistoric man in search of game to hunt.
Several war cemeteries commemorating foreign soldiers who fought in these mountains can also be visited on theAsiago Plateau. Two of these are the Barenthal English Cemetery and the Granezza Cemetery, which are managed directly by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Today 126 fallen in the former and 139 in the latter, belonging to the troops of the XIV Corps of the British Expeditionary Force who fought between Asiago and Canove are buried there.
In 1918 British soldiers were prominent in the defense of the territories west of the Plateau, especially during the desperate Austro-Hungarian offensive on June 15, 1918. A complex system of trenches, armored posts and shelters still visible today was built. It is certainly worth mentioning the old British military field hospital with its typical vaulted concrete construction, which makes one think more of a bunker than a health care facility. Returning toward Asiago, crossing the ancient Kaberlaba district there is a chance to visit the Water Museum, which represents the many aspects of the environment-human relationship through the role of water.
Technical description:
The landscape along the trail is the typical pre-Alpine environment, with alternating forests and clearings, everywhere there are outcrops of huge limestone boulders typical of the “block” karstification of the Plateau. Near the Kaberlaba district, we are immersed in peasant culture, among mowing meadows and pastures for raising cattle that give the good milk used to produce the excellent Asiago cheese.
