From Bormio to the Stelvio Pass
Description of the route
An icon of the cycling world, the“Cima Coppi” is par excellence the Stelvio Pass, which at 2,758 meters is the highest point ever reached by the Giro d’Italia.
It can be reached from three slopes. This is the Valtellina trail, which ascends along the Braulio valley-with its rushing waterfall-in a succession of hairpin bends and surrounded by wilderness.
The fatigue and silence are interrupted by the whistling of groundhogs. Chamois, ibex and eagles make this climb, in the Stelvio National Park, fascinating and impressive.
Technical description:
On the Lombardy side, the climb begins in Bormio (1,225 m) and is about 21.5 km (36 hairpin bends) long. After about 15 km there is the Pian di Grembo, a stretch of about one kilometer with modest gradients. The last 2-3 km are the hardest, hovering around 8%. The average slope is 7.1%, for a total elevation gain of more than 1,500 m. The climb is not impossible to tackle. However, it is necessary not to expend too much energy before leaving, mainly because of the altitude.
