Lake Orta is famous for being the most romantic lake in Italy: picturesque villages that have inspired writers, filmmakers and landscape architects rise in its surroundings.
A tour of the lake by e-bike, amid the colors and flavors of the surrounding villages, is an experience not to be missed by anyone here.
The lake tour is passable in both directions. The counterclockwise route is described here.
The start is in Omegna, on the northern “tip” of the lake. From here immediately begins the approximately 6-km-long climb (with a gradient varying between 6% and 8%) that passes through the villages of Brolo and Nonio and arrives in Cesara. The subsequent descent takes us back along the lakeshore to Alzo di Pella.
This stretch of road, in the first part very scenic, then turns into a road through the Pellino valley, named after the river that runs through it.
The first stop in the town square provides a view of the lake, with Isola San Giulio and the Orta peninsula, while behind stands the Sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso, perched on the mountain.
Back on the main road, we descend to Pella, a small town overlooking the lake, where there is also a free e-bike charging point. Continuing on the road, we skirt the lake until we reach the first part of the dirt track, about 6 km in length, which leads to the town of Gozzano, the southern tip of the lake.
Going up from Gozzano Lido, take State Road 229 leading to Orta San Giulio, the “pearl” of the lake, overlooking the island of the same name, the “Island of Silence,” dominated by the Benedictine Abbey.
Still driving north along the state highway, one arrives in Pettenasco; here begins the second stretch of dirt road that runs along the lake, passing through the various accommodations in the village.
Once the section is completed, we resume the state highway, which takes us back to our starting point in Omegna.
