Home » Giazza, the last stronghold of the Cimbri in Lessinia
Giazza is one of the rare examples of “language islands” in Italy. The first German settlers settled in these areas around 1340, following in the footsteps of their countrymen who had arrived in Lessinia some eighty years earlier. Nature, history, but above all, the environmental fabric in which, for centuries, human affairs have been intertwined constitutes the focus that fascinates the hiker who visits these places for the first time and beyond.
In Giazza, Ljetzan in Cimbrian, hikes always take place on old paths that were once the only routes between the twenty contrade that made up the community. A succession of naturalistic emergencies and landscapes rich in pathos enraptures the hiker both in summer and in the silence of winter.
Technical description:
The trail runs on easy paths, passable in summer and winter. During the cold season, if there is no snow, light hiking crampons are recommended because of the ice that forms on the trails. As the route is entirely on a NW facing slope, the sun comes late in winter.
From Giazza to Contrada Selle, follow the CAI 251 trail that climbs among the hornbeams and beeches of a young forest. Maintaining altitude on a clear path (CAI 284) through spectacular mixed forests, we reach Vaizelù (1000 m.), where there is the Veneto Agricoltura house.
Next we drive along the carriage road (closed to transit) of Val Fraselle, very easy and convenient CAI 280 to Giazza, touching on Contrada Gisoul (906 m.), inhabited all year round.
Route type: loop
Length: 6 km
Uphill elevation gain: 340 m
Downhill elevation gain: 340 m
Highest point: 1100 m
Lowest point: 760 m
Technical tips:
Water supply can be found in the locality of Vaizelù.
The route can also be done in reverse: it is well marked and only at Prusti di Sotto, to get to Prusti di Sopra, you need to be careful to take the right path that passes just above the houses. If you go down in reverse, however, you do not need to pay attention.
The Fraselle Valley carriage road is very convenient but requires care if driven in rain because it is steep and slippery. Not recommended when there is ice on bottom.
