Home » Hiking in the Valley of the Progni
Thehike winds along the steep limestone slopes of western Lessinia, in the picturesque nature oasis called Valle dei Progni, or the “Valley of the Streams.”
Following narrow rock-step passages, which sometimes force the use of hands, the route is at times smooth and comfortable, at others more challenging, but still fun, never exposed and moderately technical. The fun is even greater with the crossing of a Tibetan bridge over the Rio Mondrago in Val Sorda at a considerable height.
This whole area is full of numerous ravines, locally called“covoli” ( from the Old German“coal,” cave), which give the opportunity to make this hike even more interesting from a naturalistic point of view.
Technical description:
Some sections of the trail, which leads from the restored Malga Biancari to the remains of the old Ghessini mill along the Rio Baiaghe, are particularly challenging slippery and are suitable for experienced hikers.
It is necessary to be sure-footed both in the first section, where the steep climb is stepped and sometimes you need to use your hands, and on the return after Malga Biancari, in some sections where the final descent can be treacherous.
Route type: loop
Length: 4 km
Uphill elevation gain: 490 m
Downhill elevation gain: 490 m
Highest point: 657 m
Lowest point: 354 m
Technical tips:
Boots or footwear are required.
It is a route that should not be tackled during the hottest hours of the day, because the initial part faces south. In some sections it is necessary to be careful not to lose the trail because it is poorly marked due to thick vegetation. After the Tibetan bridge, on the ascent to Malga Biancari, there are fixed ropes that make safety.
Ferrata equipment is NOT required for the described route. It is necessary to have at least one liter of water with you. At Malga Biancari there is possibility of provisioning.
