Home » Itineraries of the Great War: Fort Campolongo
The route begins with the dirt road that you take a hundred meters before the parking lot of the Campolongo Refuge. In the first part we cross a portion of pastureland and then plunge into a cooler and shadier environment, the coniferous forest.
Continuing along the dirt road, keeping to the right at the fork, the vegetation slowly begins to thin out, thus offering numerous viewpoints over the Val d’Astico below. From this point on, the hike takes on a notable historical character: in fact, already a rainwater collection tank can be seen on the right. This work, given the karst characteristics of the plateau soil, served to supply water to the Italian troops in force at Fort Campolongo above.
Continuing the ascent, after a few minutes you reach the entrance to the fort. Looking at the entrance already one can appreciate the majesty of this work and the attention to detail typical of Italian military architecture. This fort was tasked, as opposed to the Austrian forts at Luserna, Verle, and Spitz Vezzena, with controlling the Val d’Astico and, on the offensive, operating on enemy fortifications.
With its highly effective initial fire, it helped annihilate the Luserna and Verle, however, within weeks of the start of hostilities, it was severely damaged and in 1916 was abandoned to remain in Austrian hands until a few months before the end of the war.
The Fort, included in the project Great War Ecomuseum of the Vicentine Pre-Alps, has recently been renovated and made fully visitable so that its original architecture can be appreciated, with its associated machine gun emplacements and the four armored domes that housed the four 149 mm cannons placed on top of the structure.
From the fort, the route heads back to the starting point, passing through the Sciason Chasm, a huge cave that plunges into a vertiginous shaft whose bottom cannot be seen.
The hike ends at Rifugio Campolongo, where there is a stamp to endorse the Notebook of Memory.
