Home » Itineraries of the Great War: Mount Zebio
Mount Zebio, due to its central location, was an important stronghold of the Austrian line of resistance that ran from Val d’Assa to Ortigara. For this reason it was equipped for defense with a complex system of trenches, tunnels and cave posts that are still visible today.
During the summer of 1916 and especially in the Battle of Ortigara (June 1917), Italian units repeatedly attacked Austrian positions without achieving any success, however.
Technical description:
The route starts from the village of Busa, with 3 km of dirt road leading to St. Anthony’s Cross. Past this, we proceed on CAI path 832, along which we encounter two places that deserve a moment of pause and recollection: the cemetery of the Sassari Brigade and the Mina di Scalambron, where the boundary stones indicate that this is a sacred place. Here, on June 8, 1917, the entire Catania Infantry Regiment was wiped out by the accidental detonation of the mine it was preparing, two days before the Italian army’s planned attack. The cause of the blast is still unknown, and the 120 dead soldiers are honored with a monument today.
We then proceed to reach the summit of Monte Zebio (1717 meters): from here a wide panorama opens up, with views ranging from the Val di Nos to the Melette di Gallio and Foza, from Cima Ekar to Monte Grappa.
Along the trenches of Mount Zebio, which can be visited on a path bordered by small rocks, the Malga Zebio is reached. Here the land is covered with pastures, and the recently renovated building consists of a single complex and has dairy facilities in which excellent alpine cheese is produced.
Starting again from the Malga, where it is possible to stamp the Notebook of Remembrance, continue along CAI route 832 to the Angel Bivouac, from which you descend back to the starting point
