Home » Ravenna and the sea
Starting from the beaches and the sea of the Riviera Romagnola, a favorite destination for mass tourism, we set out to what was the last capital of the Western Roman Empire, to discover and learn about some tangible evidence of the historical period of transition between the ancient and the early Middle Ages.
Ravenna, a city suspended between land and sea, Goths and Romans, Aryans and Catholics, as well as between preservation of its historical-landscape heritage and pressing industrialization, whose past fortunes are due to the model of a lagoon city that provided protection, and allowed prosperity, first to Spina and later to Venice. Some of the monuments touched by the route have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
