Home » REVOLTO VALLEY AND DINOSAUR FOOTPRINTS ON THE BELLA LASTA
An evocative loop trek in the Revolto Valley in eastern Lessinia, including breathtaking views and important archaeological sites. Walking in the historic borderlands during the Great War.
The loop trail starts from the Revolto Refuge at an elevation of 1338 m.asl. Immediately the CAI trail climbs the steep slope of Cima Trappola, which at this point is covered with ancient beech trees.
This trail runs along the line of what was once the border between the Kingdom of Italy and the South Tyrol of Austria-Hungary. The milestones that still stand along the route are evocative reminders of the passage of soldiers, border guards and smugglers, who once traveled these woods at night carrying salt and tobacco for hire.
Once you reach an altitude of 1,500 meters, you continue on an easy diagonal that runs among the scree of the “Bella Lasta” locality, famous for the fossilized dinosaur footprints (found by chance in the early 1990s) imprinted on the limestone that forms these mountains. It is further evidence of the sandy bottom of a shallow, tropical-type sea that once covered this area.
From Bella Lasta you can quickly get to the Malera Pass (1722 m.) for a quick look at the views of upper Lessinia and Valle d’Illasi, and then descend to close the tour via the steep path leading to Baito Mandrielo, an interesting building used in the past by the herdsmen and woodcutters of the area.
The area surrounding the lodge, once a pasture, is in the process of being covered by dense vegetation of rowan, poplar and larch trees.
From the baito we continue on the steep steps of the track that, re-entering the bright beech forest, leads us to the asphalt road at Rifugio Boschetto (1151 m.). If you wish, you can walk the last stretch on the convenient cart track that takes you back to the starting point in twenty minutes.
The route does not present any major technical difficulties although it requires a medium physical commitment due to the elevation gain in the first section. The CAI reference trail is no. 190 in the direction of Cima Trappola and then no. 287. There is no chance to go wrong because the signage along the route is quite clear.

Consigli tecnici
It is not recommended to do the traverse on the Bella Lasta scree and in any case also the ascent into the forest during rain and snowfall. Not recommended in winter because of avalanche danger.
With snow and throughout the winter season, the access road to the Revolto Valley past the village of Giazza is closed to traffic.
Mountain hiking clothing, backpack with provisions and liquids. Appropriate footwear such as lightweight treads or boots. Hiking or trail shoes are also fine if you do not have excessive weight on your shoulders. The descent from Baito Mandrielo is treacherous in rainy weather or wet ground.
It is necessary to have a good supply of water because there are no refueling points throughout the entire route.
