Home » Secret Piedmont: biking in Canavese
The Ivrea Moraine Amphitheater Greenhouse is a spectacular, unique glacial complex in Piedmont. Cycling in this territory, which separates the historical-geographical region of the Canavese with the Biella region, it means savoring the essences of a land little traveled by mass tourism, immersing oneself in the nature of a corner of Piedmont that stretches between the foothills of the Alps and the great plains, where for years a strong industrial culture has developed.
From Ivrea to Lake Viverone, from the countryside to the hills, a bike tour suitable for curious bike tourists who can discover ancient rural villages, farmsteads and small inns where there is never a shortage of good wine.
Itinerary featured in the Guidebook Viatoribus: “Italia in Bici con Gusto”
Route description:
The 56-km route is a loop, starting and finishing in Ivrea.
Leaving the city, skirting the Naviglio and then crossing cultivated fields in a southerly direction, one arrives at the hamlet of Tina. A little further on, it crosses the ascent to Caravino: the route follows the carriage road, which in 22 not too many hairpin bends leads to Masino Castle. Leaving the village following the boundary wall, a dirt road leads to Cascina Campore, ideal for a food and wine stop.
You pedal back to the votive chapel of Lusenta, continuing in the direction of Bocca d’Arbaro. From here take the left to the hamlet of Francia, then keeping to the right reach the shores of Lake Viverone on easy dirt road between farmsteads and orchards.
After a visit to the nearby pile-dwelling village, we resume pedaling circumnavigating the lake from the south, pointing toward Cavaglià, from where we begin to climb back to Ivrea.
We pass the villages of Roppolo, Pioglio (with views of Monte Rosa) and the hamlet of Santa Elisabetta with Lake Bertignano. From here it is uphill to Piverone, a place famous for wine production, then on asphalt back to Ivrea through Palazzo Canavese, Bollengo and Cascinette.
