Home » Tatti and Montemassi: medieval villages in Tuscany
Beautiful hiking route among the most striking landscapes of the Tuscan Maremma, places of ancient battles and transhumance routes, immortalized by Simone Martini’s 14th-century frescoes consevated in Siena’s Palazzo Comunale.
One can start indifferently from one of the three centers located on the route: Tatti, Montemassi, Ribolla.
From Tatti to Montemassi we travel the ancient road that led the Sienese troops to the siege of the castle and admire the same perspective as in Martini’s famous painting “Guidoriccio da Fogliano.”
From Montemassi to Ribolla, a recent town with a mining history, follow the ancient road that led to the beautiful town of Massa Marittima, which is said to have the most beautiful square in Italy.
From Ribolla to Tatti, returning, one climbs along the millennia-old Dogana road that brought back the transhumance of flocks from Maremma to Siena.
