STAGE 3: Maranola – Itri (17 km)
The third stage of the Aurunci Trail starts from the village of Maranola, crosses the western slope of the Aurunci Mountains and arrives in the village of Itri, following ancient paths that shepherds used to trade coal and ice.
About halfway along the trail we reach a cave, Fabio’s Pit, which can be visited in part, and a perfectly preserved ancient “snow pit,” evidence of ice production and marketing in the 1800s.
Technical description:
From Maranola ‘s main square, walk through the old town, following the main axis up to the fortress. From the parking lot below, go down a narrow path that, crossing some land, climbs and intercepts the paved road in the direction of Redeemer.
A little later on the right is the path that is still taken by pilgrims to get to the Hermitage of St. Michael.
After a short while you reach a crossroads: here follow the cartroad to the left in the direction of Rifugio Acquaviva, which is reached in about 4 km. Continuing uphill on Trail No. 956, after 50 meters you will come to Sosta Bellavista on the right, where you can stop for lunch.
After crossing theMesole plateau, continue climbing to the right along the path that leads to Pozzo della Neve and then to the Monte Viola saddle (km 8). Here the descent begins, pointing left along Trail No. 958 towards the Campello Vecchio Fork and then to the Tozze Refuge (km 10).
A downhill cartroad finally leads to the village of Itri, the destination of this third stage.

The Aurunci Trail is an evocative hike in the heart of a little-known area of southern Lazio, the Aurunci Mountains Natural Park. Its characteristic feature is its proximity to the sea: the view of the gulf ranges from Vesuvius to Ischia to the Pontine Islands and the Circeo promontory.
This path enjoys a great primacy: Mount Petrella, the highest peak in the Aurunci, at 1540 meters (1,500 feet) abutting the Gulf of Gaeta, is the highest and closest mountain to the sea in Europe.
The Camino involves a walking route of about 90 km, to be undertaken in 4 or 5 stages.
