Home » The Etruscan Coast – long route
Route that offers moments dedicated to gastronomy, culture, entertainment and sports. It takes place in a typical Tuscan landscape: passing through towns steeped in history, skirting the Tyrrhenian Sea and immersing oneself in the unspoiled greenery of the Pisan-Livorno hills, ending with the panorama of the Cecina valley, dominated by the Balze and Volterra.
Technical description:
The bike route is 137 km, suitable for experienced legs because of the significant elevation changes encountered. Point of departure and return is the historic town of Rosignano Marittimo, in the province of Livorno.
The first part of the route is of medium difficulty. From the Tuscan town, one proceeds toward the sea and travels along the coastal stretch between the headlands of Castiglioncello and Quercianella, then heads inland to Santa Luce and the Pisan hills. After tackling the hills, passing through the Etruscan villages of Pomaia and Castellina Marittima, we descend the valley southward pointing toward Montecatini Val di Cecina on a continuous and challenging uphill stretch. We travel along a section of valley at the foot of Volterra and, at La Sterza, head uphill again toward Castellina Marittima. From here it’s back to Rosignano, wheeling toward the sea.
