Home » The Mountains of the Moon in MTB
A beautiful MTB route in the heart of the Mountains of the Moon, a striking landscape of the Upper Susa Valley in Piedmont. Cycling through green alpine valleys and small glacial lakes.
Technical description:
Departing from the charming village of Cesana Torinese, start pedaling on the SS24 in the direction of the French border, arriving shortly at the junction for Sagna Longa/Laghi (km 2).
Here begins the dirt road immersed in the pine forest, which, after several uphill hairpin bends, arrives at Sagna Longa, a pleasant resort characterized by numerous chalets scattered among the vegetation, in winter accessible only by ski lifts.
The route continues uphill all the way to the Bercia pass. The view from here begins to open up and the vegetation to thin out. Following the GPS track, at a fork in the road (km 13) take the right road that, having crossed the French border, in just over 2 km leads to the banks of the Gignoux Lake, also called “lake of 7 colors,” because of the iridescent hues of its waters, which range from deep blue to light green.
After a much-needed stop, we start again by turning back to the previous fork. Here we take the other direction, which leads downhill to the Capanna Mautino hut, where it is possible to refresh and admire the Black Lake below (km 23). The itinerary continues by returning to Sagna Longa (km 27) via a downhill route that, intersecting with the outward route, reaches Claviere, the last leg of the hike (km 31) before returning to Cesana Torinese.
This section is decidedly scenic and offers the chance to enjoy a wonderful bicycle ride in one of the most beautiful areas of Piedmont, the so-called Mountains of the Moon. Prominent in the Alpine landscape is Mount Chaberton, famous for having the highest summit fortification in Europe (3130 m).
In Claviere it is also possible to walk across the Tibetan suspension bridge, made of steel cables, which is among the longest in the world: a total of 544 meters at a height from the ground of about 30 meters.
