We walk along the Agliena Valley, appreciating the architecture of the historic bridleways observed by Leonardo da Vinci and the small chapel of St. Michael in Semifonte, whose dome is an exact, scaled-down reproduction of that of Florence Cathedral.
Panoramic views of the Tuscan hills, the wild descent from Petrognano, views of the renowned Chianti vineyards and olive groves accompany the ride, before climbing back to Barberino Val d’Elsa where you can indulge in a well-deserved dip in the flavors of local food and wine.
Technical description:
From the parking lot on Via Ugo Foscolo (at the Barberino sports field) follow the road in the direction of Tavarnelle. Pass the cemetery and continue on the roadway for a few meters, turning left toward Villa di Spoiano. You then descend through the vineyards (watch out for the electrified fence to be opened and closed) to the stream, which should be followed westward.
At the meeting of the stream with the Agliena River, climb to the right to a dirt road, then descend again, crossing the river, to get on the paved road that leads to St. Michael’s Chapel, where it is recommended to stop.
From here continue to Petrognano. Near the last houses, turn left into the parking lot of a farmhouse and descend to the right among the olive trees, following the trail until you cross the creek again.
Finally, it crosses the road coming from “La Spinosa” farm that leads back to Barberino.
