Home » Tour to Tarquinia on the Etruscan roads
A journey to discover Tarquinia, the turreted city at the heart of the ancient Etruscan civilization, which settled and developed in these territories and played a major role in the history of ancient Rome.
Pedaling through landscapes that seem designed for cycling, we visit the historic center, which preserves the most important evidence of the mysteries and wonders of the Etruscan and Roman worlds, from the numerous necropolis to the artifacts preserved in the National Archaeological Museum, in symbiosis with precious medieval architecture.
The route goes all the way to the sea at Porto Clementino, an ancient landing place from Etruscan times, with passage through the protected nature of the Saline Reserve.
Itinerary featured in the Guidebook Viatoribus “Italia in Bici con Gusto”
Itinerary description:
The loop route is 30 km long, starting and returning to Tarquinia.
From the Monterozzi Necropolis, one points toward the historic center by crossing Porta Tarquinia. Pass Piazza Giacomo Matteotti and continue right on Via Dante Alighieri to the viewpoint of Porta Farnese.
From here turn back across the village downhill to the Archaeological Museum (Piazza Cavour), where you turn left onto Via Umberto I. Shortly after, turn right onto Via XX Settembre to the Church of St. Anthony.
From here, taking Via Umberto I again, we exit the city walls at Piazzale Europa.
Continue toward the stadium along Via Tirreno and Via Madonna del Pianto, then go onto the “Doganaccia” by taking Via dei Principi, a dirt road that crosses an important archaeological area.
You pedal toward the King’s Mound, where you take the first dirt road on the right that downhill turns onto Via dell’Acquetta after about 400 meters, returning to asphalt.
Following the road, one turns onto the Old Aurelia in a southerly direction, then follows the signs for SP 99 “Litoranea,” passing the highway and the railway line. At the end of the road follow for Tarquinia Lido.
Upon reaching the barrage, continue to the right on asphalt skirting the salt marshes until the intersection that on the left allows you to enter the Saline Reserve.
You pedal to the small village and then turn back, bending to the left towards the sea and Porto Clementino.
From here you return to Tarquinia on SP 44. Past the San Giusto Barrier, crossing the historic center, we return to the vicinity of the Etruscan Necropolis of Monterozzi.
