Discover the Campanian landscapes of the Italian Risorgimento, walk in the footsteps of Hannibal, in the places of the 2nd Punic War. A stone’s throw from Capua.
South of the Volturno River, a waterway that bathes Capua and flows into the sea between Naples and Gaeta, armed clashes between Garibaldi’s and Bourbon troops took place from September 26 and October 2, 1860. The Battle of the Volturno is considered the last pitched battle of the Risorgimento before the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy. Sant’Angelo in Formis, the location where Giuseppe Garibaldi was hosted, played a strategic and decisive role in the battle that took place near the Volturno River.
It was not only during the Italian Risorgimento that this territory entered the great course of history. Hannibal, in fact, camped here in 215 B.C. during his crossing, and also here the Roman dictator Lucius Cornelius Silla defeated the consul Gaius Norbanus and the partisans of Caius Marius.
This itinerary is built on the route of the 5th Trail of Mount Tifata (2nd stage of the Contrade Trail Circuit), which, through a rugged and wild climb, leads to locations with a fairy-tale essence, such as on the anticima of Mount San Nicola, where the ruins of theHermitage of Sant’Offa can be admired.
The trail reaches the cross on top of Mount Tifata, an extraordinary vantage point with views of the Caserta plain and, on clear days, even the Tyrrhenian Sea and its islands.
