Home » Trekking to Lake Volaia in the Carnic Alps
The Carnic Alps are the natural border between Italy and Austria, and the glacial lake of Volaia is right near the Pass that was the scene of bitter battles.
The trail from Rifugio Tolazzi, above the hamlet of Collina in the municipality of Forni Avoltri, is convenient and well marked. It soon leads us into a mixed forest of fir and mountain pine, then opens into a majestic alpine environment. Mount Coglians, the highest elevation in Friuli, Sasso Nero, Capolago and other rocky towers constantly surround the hiker, bewitching him with colorful dolomite-rich limestone walls.
The route is also one of the direct access (or return) routes for the famous Carnic Crossing, one of the most spectacular treks in Europe!
