Home » Trekking to the Cevedale Lakes in the Stelvio National Park
It is a striking immersion in nature this beautiful loop trek in the Cevedale Mountain Range, with the exceptional setting of the Stelvio National Park.
The itinerary features enchanting glacial lakes: Marmot Lake, Long Lake and Black Lake. Crossing the Càreser reservoir, we reach the small but fascinating body of water of Lake of the Blades.
Possible sightings of the park’s mountain wildlife make the trek even more interesting, with chamois, marmots, snow grouse, deer and eagles likely to show themselves to the walker. The landscape is always majestic, characterized by the snow-capped peaks of Cevedale, Palon de la Mare, Rosole and Vioz.
Technical description:
The itinerary starts from the parking lot of Malga Mare (1972 m), from which you take the SAT 102 trail that runs alongside the Malga itself (2,301 m), then climbs through a stone pine forest to a scenic plateau known as Pian Venezia. From here the view sweeps over the snow-capped peaks of Cevedale and the valleys below shaped by ancient glaciers.
Looking up to the top of a rocky outcrop, you can see the Cevedale “G. Larcher” Refuge (2,608 m), which can be reached by continuing along the trail: this is a privileged position for observing the vast and characteristic glacial environment.
The hike continues along the SAT 104 trail to a small pass, then descends to a vast plateau dotted with numerous small lakes of glacial origin. From here you reach the enchanting Marmot Lake and proceed along the SAT 123 trail, along an easy level path that passes near Long Lake and reaches the shores of the small Black Lake, just before the Càreser reservoir (2,603 m).
You cross the lake following the dam wall to the guards’ buildings. From here, the SAT 123 trail descends through boulder fields with numerous switchbacks. Continuing to zigzag, you descend into a beautiful forest of distinctive stone pine trees. With a short detour it is possible to reach the tiny Lake of the Blades (2,275 m).
Back on the trail, we descend to the parking lot of Malga Mare.
