Home » Trekking to the summit of the Aguz
Beautiful trek through the typical alpine grasslands of theLessin Plateau, from the Bocca di Selva Refuge to the summit of the Aguz. A unique setting of naturalistic and historical importance along routes that were once lands of conflict in the Great War.
Technical description:
The itinerary starts from Rifugio Bocca di Selva (1,551 m.asl) initially covering the (white) provincial road No. 14; near the junction to the Primaneve Refuge, keep left taking a well-traced little path that leads to the Podestaria Refuge (1,655 m.asl), the historic seat of the Podestà, the Scaliger arm of the law since 1385.
The environment is barren, characterized by typical alpine grasslands and the outcropping here and there of a few portions of Ammonite Red, a rock that distinguishes the Lessin plateau.
From Podestaria we continue uphill for a few more meters, then we pass over the “cords” and enter the valley, which in a northerly direction opens the view to a fantastic panorama, dotted with the peaks of the most important mountain massifs of Trentino, from Adamello to Brenta to Paganella.
The road you follow is absolutely free of technical difficulties. The vegetation is sparse, and among the alpine puddles, which in summer are used to water the many grazing cows, you can catch glimpses of mutes, choughs and buzzards.
From Malga Costabella you descend a little further, and then take an old, well-marked military path that, through a shady larch forest, leads with one last climb to the summit of the Aguz (1,592 mslm), where there are still the remains of the trenches and emplacements that the Italian Corps of Engineers prepared in 1915 in preparation for the Great War.
In this place, it really seems as if time has stood still.
The return trip, for safety reasons, is along the same route as the outward journey, although it could actually be shortened by going through the grasslands.
Technical description:
The route has no difficult or technical passages. It is also moderately strenuous and can be traveled by MTB, Nordic Walking or snowshoeing in winter.
It should be remembered that since there is no vegetation, when the wind blows in these areas it can be very annoying, and especially in winter the perceived temperatures drop well below -10°.
The reference trail is No. 113, but the last section before the Aguz summit has no CAI numbering. In ideal conditions, with snowshoes on your feet it becomes a beautiful route, one of the most spectacular in the entire Lessinia.
Route type: loop
Elevation gain: 190 m
Downhill elevation gain: 190 m
Highest point: 1722 m
Lowest point: 1551 m
Technical tips:
Regarding clothing, hiking or trekking boots are fine in all seasons if you have some extra weight on your shoulders. In summer, recommended sunglasses and headgear, as well as windproof jacket. In winter the cold can be intense so a real down jacket, gloves, beanie is a must. In autumn, with the first ice, lightweight crampons and a pair of trekking poles are very useful.
There is refreshment available in Podestaria, as at the arrival and departure point at the Bocca di Selva Refuge.
