Home » Two wheels in the city: Bologna, the learned and turreted
Discover the artistic and historical peculiarities of Europe’s oldest university town, pedaling on cobblestone streets, through atmospheric squares and lively green spaces. In perpetual company with the arcades and the many medieval towers that are eternal symbols of one of the largest and best-preserved historic centers in Italy.
The route goes through some landmarks of the city: from Via del Pratello to Piazza Maggiore, with its famous statue of Neptune and the Cathedral of San Petronio, pausing under the Two Towers before gazing at the unique beauty of Piazza Santo Stefano and its seven chapels nestled among them.
After reaching some important churches, such as the monumental churches of San Francesco and San Domenico, the trail leads to discover the Margherita Gardens, Bologna’s true green lung.
Having finished the dutiful tour through the park’s narrow streets, there is still room for a quick jaunt on the new bicycle path that runs along the entire circle of city avenues, uniting as it once did the ancient ‘gates’ of the city.
