Italy by Bike with Taste

Itinerary description:
The bike tour in Val di Merse is a loop tour (47 km), starting and finishing near Sovicille.
From the village take SP 37 toward Siena, arriving at Ponte Spino and the parish church of San Giovanni Battista. Keeping left at subsequent intersections, take SP 101 towards Florence to Pian del Lago. Here, near the equestrian club of the same name, continue on 101 to the left to reach the Castle of Celsa among dry stone walls, olive groves and cultivated fields.
Arriving at Passo di Celsa (573 m.), a tortuous descent begins, winding through beautiful views to embrace the Tuscan Apennines and Chianti. After 5 km, just before Scorgiano, turn left toward Pievescola, following a lovely undulating road bordered by vineyards and typical red soil fields.
After a stop, continue along SP 52 (Montagnola Senese) going up towards the small village of Simignano and the Passo degli Incrociati (505 m), then descend again between scenic switchbacks towards Ancaiano and, finally, Sovicille.

Technical tips:
The route enters the heart of the “Montagnola,” developing entirely on asphalt and taking advantage of a traffic-free secondary roadway. It is an undulating course with two fairly long but steady climbs.
